In our spiritual lives, our theological baseline is absolute. Because of grace, your position in Christ is complete, perfectly secure, and requires no further effort to attain. Yet, looking at the two columns on screen, we see a conflict. The left column shows our perfect position, but the right column reflects our daily reality. We still experience days where we feel distant, weak, or entirely unworthy. Trying to use sheer head knowledge to tell ourselves not to feel that way rarely works in real life. We need a concrete mechanism to bridge the gap between what is true in our heads and what we actually experience in our relationships. That bridge is a practical roadmap.
By mapping out the seven distinct stages of maturity and navigating them alongside a four-person care team, we can actively walk out our spiritual growth. When we confuse our perfect positional reality with our ongoing practical maturity, we leave ourselves exhausted. The moment we inevitably stumble, we end up isolated and confused about what to do next. Let's map out exactly how this growth happens using this staircase graphic.
Step one is the fetus stage, where a person completely suppresses their own sense of self to keep the peace. As we develop, we move up to step two, the infant stage. Here, a person discovers their identity but remains highly dependent on others to have every need met. This infant stage is our purpose. It is the primary relational friction point. When you feel overly sensitive, deeply flawed, or disconnected, this is exactly where those feelings reside.
At step three, the child stage, the dynamic shifts. We stop looking only at our own needs and begin taking personal responsibility, recognizing others' needs are just as valid. Moving from the infant to the child stage requires intentional self-control. It is the necessary leap from passive dependency into true relational accountability.
As the staircase builds upward, we hit step four, the teenager. Here, an individual gains powerful, king-like agency. However, with that power comes the severe risk of sliding into an ego-driven isolation.
Steps five and six are the adult and parent stages. Here, the focus shifts. We step down from the throne of our own ego to protect others, willingly making sacrifices for the people we find lovable. Finally, step seven is the elder. This represents ultimate maturity. An elder serves as a foundational platform for the community, willing to sacrifice even for those who are completely unlovable. True spiritual maturity is learning how to acquire personal power, and then deliberately laying it down for the sake of the community.
When you fail in your daily life, or when you feel weak and unworthy, it does not mean your theology is broken, and it certainly does not mean you have lost your position in grace. Looking at the full seven steps, those negative feelings simply indicate a functional regression. Regardless of how mature you are, stress causes you to drop straight back down to the infant stage in your daily practice. The default human reaction to this sudden drop is shame. We pull away, shrink back, and isolate ourselves from the people around us.
Instead of hiding, we use the "return to three" mechanism. The moment you feel that weakness, treat it as an alarm bell. Stop, turn around, and immediately reconnect — upward to God, and outward to your companions. Negative emotions are not a sign of spiritual death. They are a built-in alert system, prompting you to initiate structured, immediate connection.
Think back to a recent conflict that left you feeling deeply ashamed, distant, and wanting to hide away from your friends or your church. Look at the two questions on screen. Based on the map we just covered, pause the video and answer: Which stage are you acting out of in that moment? And what is your immediate next step? If you identified that you are operating out of the infant stage, you are exactly right. And for the second question, the solution is never to isolate yourself. The immediate step is to stop, turn, and activate your care team. Identifying our behavior as a stage on a map stops us from viewing our struggle as an identity failure, making it a temporary technical regression. This shift from "who I am" to "where I am" allows the shame to dissipate, giving us the clarity to execute the next action.
Walking this seven-stage map alone is an impossible task. An isolated brain packed full of correct theology is entirely useless when we are paralyzed by relational conflict. This is why we use a four-person, five-legged team structure. Like a race where participants are tied together at the ankle, this structure ensures that when one person regresses to the infant stage and loses their footing, the collective momentum of the others keeps them moving forward. Watch this visualization. To see how recovery works, it begins by moving from an isolated "me," sliding over to link arms with three others, forming a tightly bound local team, the "us." This four-person unit acts as your conduit to reintegrate into the wider, fully unified body of believers, the "we."
To practice this specific dynamic in real time, visit me2us2WE.info to join the Maturing in Grace four-person immersive experience. Committing to shared values, and sharing your own values with others through that four-person immersive experience, is the reliable way to turn abstract grace into a lived, breathing reality.
Let's recap the workflow. First, your baseline: your position in grace is perfect, regardless of how messy your current day feels. Second, the diagnosis: the moment you feel distant, dirty, or ashamed, you have simply regressed to the infant stage. Third, the action: do not isolate. Use that negative feeling as your trigger to return to the present. And finally, "return to three," calling on your care team to help you climb back up the map. Here is your final consolidated framework. Take a screenshot of this page so you have the staircase, the trigger mechanism, and the team pathway readily available. Real spiritual growth does not happen in our heads. It happens in the muddy, beautiful reality of walking step-by-step with others.
